When to Make the Move to a Senior Care Facility

By far, the most frequently asked question we’ve been asked over the past 10 years is “When is the right time to make the move from home to a senior care facility?” This critical decision is never easy, and there are no right answers. However, we would say that the following examples should trigger this difficult discussion. Each family and their situation is unique and no one knows your loved one better than you. Consider the move if you are experiencing any of the following:

When It Is Not Safe To Live At Home. Some examples are obvious, and some not so obvious.

  • Leaving the stove top burners on
  • Forgetting burning candles, causing a fire hazard
  • Falling victim to Elder Financial Abuse and scams
  • Improper use of the heating and cooling system
  • Failing to lock the doors
  • Making ill-advised financial decisions
  • Wandering away, and can’t find their way back home
  • Not taking their medications on time or at all
  • Injured at home with frequent falls
  • Frequent hospitalizations
  • Frequently calling 911 for help

When the Health of the Caregiver Begins to Decline

  • “Health” includes physical, emotional, and mental health
  • When the caregiver’s health declines, now you have two loved ones in decline
  • Stress is a very powerful force! I’ve seen people literally caregive themselves to their death!
  • Caregivers must take good care of themselves to be a good caregiver for their loved one in need

When the Cost of Homecare Becomes Too Much

  • The decision to move could be financially driven if homecare services become unaffordable

When the Care that You Provide is Not Enough

  • Sometimes we can’t keep up with the increasing care needs of our declining loved ones
  • You have done your best but just can’t do it anymore
  • Why not transition from being the caregiver to the role of care advocate and manage the care provided by a senior care facility?
  • Go back to being the son, daughter, or spouse and let the facility staff worry about meal time, bathing, medications, etc
